Phrasing: Rapping on the Sax & Lyrical Playing - SUNDAY August 2 (3-5PM ET)
Join us this Sunday 8/2 for a live online workshop all about phrasing! It’s important to simultaneously build knowledge of the notes you play AND the knowledge of how to use it in a musical sentence. Great phrasing will allow you to create a compelling musical performance when playing the melody and improvising!
This will also be our most interactive workshop to date! We’re delighted that many of you from our past workshops have been eager to join us on screen and get real time feedback. This time we’ll be dedicating more time to just that!
In this workshop you will learn how to:
- Improvise using rap rhythms allowing for more rhythmic phrasing
- How to approach and play the melody in different ways including using lyrics as your guide
- How to integrate different phrasing lengths including a short (1 bar) and longer melodic phrase (2 - 4 bars)
- How to keep good time when play acapella or with a band
We’ll be walking you through each technique step by step, giving you exercises you can practice at home and answering your questions live. We’ll also leave you with a PDF workbook, a private curated playlist and an invite to a post workshop virtual jam session!!!
There will be a live Q&A for each topic in the curriculum and we will spend time answering your questions regarding each topic!

Keeping Good Time (20 min)
It’s important as a horn player to not only play the melody and internalize the chord changes but also keep good time as you do it. In this segment we will lead you through exercises that will allow you to keep good time when you play acapella and with a band. This is an essential foundation for playing with good phrasing.
Rapping on the Sax with Leo (20 min)
Leo P will lead you through exercises to expand your phrasing including punchy, rhythmic rap rhythms. He will show you how you can go about creating your own rap rhythms on your instrument!
Lyrical Phrasing with Grace (20 min)
Grace will show you how to create variations and embellishments based upon the melody when you improvise. You’ll learn how you can use the lyrics to lead you in your musical decisions and to create a stronger emotional connection to what you are playing. You will also learn how to improvise using short (1 bar) and longer phrase lengths (2- 4 bars.)
Live Demonstration & Feedback Portion (45 min)
We'll bring students on to the screen to try out these techniques and get our real time feedback!
Q&A (15 min)
Ask us anything!
Don't take our word for how awesome this will be, here is what past students are saying:
“The biggest take-away from your workshop is this - access to your enthusiasm and encouragement. It has provided me with extra air under my wings in approaching my practice at the craft of playing the saxophone. You guys are the new generation, the mantle has been passed on and it couldn't be in better hands. God Bless you both!” - Jay 🎷
"You guys! I am so proud of my kid, thank you so much for encouraging her! She felt like the online workshops weren't for her because she is a student, but went for it and really gained a lot from them... both skills and confidence! Thank you for including all skill levels!" - Stacey ❤️
"Thanks again for the awesome workshop last weekend. My son thinks the world of you both. And I know Leo has been so instrumental in shaping his confidence - not just in music but in life. Just thank you. So much. These workshops are fantastic." - Jessica 🎉
